Longfellow Renovation Planning
Longfellow is in the midst of a school-wide renovation that began in February of 2014. Our new and improved facility will be LEED Certified and our planning committee is looking at differentiated ways to include green-friendly themes such as natural light, gardens, energy conservation, water conservation, and nature conservation. Members of our Green Team are included in all stages of planning.

Carpool Pals
Each morning staff can earn the Assistant Principal's parking spot by being the first "carpool pals" (2 or more staff members carpooling to school) to arrive at Longfellow each morning. These staff members are also spotlighted in our staff newsletter. This year a reserved parking spot has become increasingly valuable due to our renovation.

Staff Water Club
In an effort to reduce the amount of plastic bottles recycled at Longfellow our staff was provided the opportunity to join our Longfellow Water Club. An initial payment allows staff members access to a water cooler for the entire school year.
Staff Water Bottles & Thermoses
We realized that we as a staff were discarding way too many plastic water bottles. As green gifts to our staff over the past two years we have provided each staff member reusable Longfellow-branded Water Bottles & Thermoses to help reduce the amount of plastic water bottles used throughout the year.

A Green Approach to Home/School Communication: The Eagle
In an effort to reduce our reliance on paper, our school newsletter, The Eagle, efforts have been made to create a concise one page bi-weekly newsletter that is delivered electronically to our school community. Families were introduced to the new version of The Eagle and asked to sign up to receive it electronically at registration, our back to school nights, and throughout the year. Those who do not have computer access signed up separately to receive a paper copy of the newsletter so that everyone can stay in tune with things that are happening around the school.
A Green Approach to Home/School Communication: LoES on Facebook & Twitter
In another attempt to go green and minimize our reliance on paper and photocopying we started a Facebook Page and Twitter Feed to electronically deliver school news to our Longfellow families. Our followers continue to climb and our paper usage continues to dwindle! Like us @

Viridian Energy PTA Partnership
Viridian Energy is a socially responsible energy company that provides clean energy choices at competitive prices. Viridian was founded with the vision to empower consumers to make a difference in the environment and their personal lives simply by switching energy providers. Our PTA has worked collaboratively with Viridian to help our families switch to a cleaner and greener energy provider and lessen our community's carbon footprint.

Staff Recyclers
Longfellow's staff recycles! The fifth grade class of 2008 donated a recycling bin to our staff lounge that has been put to very good use over the years. Over the year's our staff has become more and more aware of our recycling efforts. Our custodial staff now empties our differentiated recycling tub and recycling can twice per week due to our staff's active participation!
Using Green to Clean!
Cleaning products are important for maintaining a sanitary environment in schools. However, chemicals in cleaning products may be hazardous to the environment and to the health of students, maintenance workers, and other school staff. "Green cleaning” reduces environmental and health risks by selecting alternative, environmentally-sensitive products, by applying these products properly, and by implementing maintenance practices that minimize exposure to cleaning products. Over the past several years, HCPSS and our wonderful custodial staff have begun to adopt green cleaning programs and practices.
