Responsible Transportation
Spring & Fall Walk to School Day
Our Longfellow school community comes together each Spring and Fall for our annual Walk to School Day Celebrations. Students walked & biked to school before our school community joined us for a school-wide morning celebration in front of school.
Our bus riders are rerouted and dropped off on Hesperus Drive at the intersection of Harvest Moon in order to join in and walk the rest of the way to school. Longfellow’s staff helped monitor our students' safety and celebrated with them leading up to the ceremony.
This Fall celebration was extra special because we also celebrated National Apple Month with free apples for our Longfellow community at Walk to School Day. Over 400 apples were given away thanks to Friends & Farms!

Longfellow's Walking Club
Our Walking Club, which began in 2012, meets monthly to support health and wellness initiatives here at Longfellow for 160 students, 5 staff members, and 10 parent volunteers. As of March 2013, our walking club has walked over 60 MILES!!!
Safe Routes to School
Walking path maps are available to our students and families on our homepage due to the fact that all students that live within a one mile radius around our school are zoned as walkers. Each and every day during PM announcements we remind our students to use the crosswalks and to travel home safely.

Car Loop Counters
Each day our Safety Patrol monitors and track the traffic volume within our carloop/busloop. This year we have 7 buses and 4 daycare/karate vans that provide transportation to our students daily plus an daily average of 42 cars per arrival/dismissal in our car loop for this school year as of 3/28/14. We encourage responsible transportation by our families by providing safety guidelines to our entire school and car rider families. We also encourage walking, hiking, or biking to school on days on weather-permitting days and our Car Loop efforts are spotlighted at our Fall & Spring Walk To School Celebrations.

Longfellow Dash Through the Paths
Each fall our PTA sponsors an Annual Longfellow Dash Through The Paths. This family event helps promote physical fitness while introducing our students and families to the walking paths that lead to our school. This helps encourage our students to know their community walking paths and use them instead of a vehicle. Over the past two years we have averaged over 100 members of our school community participate in the one mile+ walk/run.
