Water Conservation/Pollution Prevention
Using Recycling to Help our Kinders learn about Worms
Kindergarten planted grass seed and lima bean plants to learn about what plants need to grow. We did an experiment to see what would happen if we tried to grow 4 different seeds- one that had water, air, soil, and sunlight, one without water, one without sunlight, one without air, and one without soil. With the help of Mrs. Frank my class made a habitat for 500 worms! We learned that worms are very good for the earth and have an important job to do. The students collected and then used recycled cardboard and newspaper then soaked it in water to layer in the worm bin. We learned that worms like a dark and damp environment. The students were able to observe and "play" with the worms before we put them in their new home! We have been caring for our new pets at school.

Saving our Bay One Drain at a Time!
In March 2014 our second graders helped create and construct a “Don’t Dump! Bay Drainage” stencil to remind the school community that we can all affect the Chesapeake Bay. All second graders at Longfellow were presented with a lesson about the Bay that focused on conservation including recycling, planting native plants and educating others.

Go Green! Extension Lessons
Ms. Flanders, our PDS Intern and green team member, facilitated extension lessons focused on the Chesapeake Bay with our kindergarteners in March 2014! The classes talked about what they already know about the Chesapeake Bay, read a non-fiction text, discussed pollution, and charted newly learned facts on a web. The kindergarteners also participated in a recycling hunt. They used clean recycled materials that were used for a sorting activity in class. The students spread the items around the playground and went on a hunt for things they could recycle! The students then needed to decide if it was paper, plastic or metal and place the item in the appropriate bag. It was a lot of fun, and the boys and girls enjoyed helping to clean their playground!

Water Conservation Awareness
The Water Conservation Team was flabbergasted by the numerous running faucets in the restrooms throughout our school. Last year, Ms. Craig's class found that the sink in her classroom alone produced half a gallon of collected water in less than one hour due to a drip! The Team was then highly motivated to do research on other facts and interesting statistics that they could include on their informative posters. Students will spend the time that remains creating eye-catching and informative posters that will be placed in every Longfellow bathroom , above every fountain, and next to every classroom in the sink. Weekly walk throughs of the school will be made to make note of any changes in student and teacher behavior. It is our hope that we will find less faucets running and that any water waste is put to good use such as cleaning chalk boards and desks or watering our outdoor garden. This year our 4th and 5th graders created posters to remind their friend "Don't Be A Drip" and to make sure all faucets are turned off.

Earth Day Water Conservation Tips
On Earth Day 2014 all Longfellow students will discuss ways they can conserve water here at school and be provided tips to discuss with their family to conserve water at home. Students will be able to use these tips as part of their at home PTA Scavenger Hunt during Green Week.
